Mark E. Paull

A Montréal writer and independent researcher whose work moves between literary nonfiction, narrative medicine and clinical artificial intelligence — and whose evidence, in all three, is the same sixty-year record.

He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1967, at eleven, and has kept a record of his management decisions ever since, first in notebooks and later by other means. That practice is where the memoir and the research both come from.

In the late 1970s he taught children with diabetes at Diabète Santé in Montréal under Mavis Véronneau, RN, working to her lesson plans and reporting to her, and did fieldwork in Indigenous communities in Northern Québec. No certification for the role existed then; the training was hers to give. Before turning to research and writing full time, he ran a travel consultancy in Montréal for thirty-four years.

His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Globe and Mail, STAT News, The Missouri Review, Intima, Minyan Magazine, Smithsonian Folklife, Breakthrough T1D Canada, CHADD's Attention, The Good Men Project, Jewish Post & News and Chicken Soup for the Soul. His peer-reviewed clinical work appears in Diabetes Care and Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics, and he serves as a peer reviewer for Diabetes Care and Clinical Diabetes.

He lives in Montréal with a Spanish greyhound named Gaia, who appears more than once in the work and has earned it.
